Howdy!
The first two days of school have been
fantastic! Thanks so much for raising your kiddos right! They're all
very sweet and have great manners!
Box tops!
Have box tops? Or soup labels? please please send those in! Each on
is worth 10 cents! Last year our class collected over $2,200 in box
tops! (multiply that out.. that is a LOT of box tops!) Tops are
collected every Friday. No need to trim perfectly.. just send them in as
is. These make a HUGE difference in what we are able to buy supply wise for our kiddos!
Coke tops?
Do
you or your family drink coke products? If your answer is yes I NEED
OUR BOX CODES AND TOP CODES! Send in your tops and codes to me so that I
can earn free gift cards to buy books for our classroom.
Each time we bank 1,400 points we can get a $20.00 gift card to Barnes
and noble. Last year we had over $80.00 in books purchased for our
room using just caps and box codes! If you don't redeem codes yourself,
please send those in! (Powerade also has codes.. send in those caps too
please!)
I have 4 series of books in my classroom
that students MUST have parent permission to read. These books are the
Divergent series, The Hunger Games series, The Maze Runner Series, and
the Twilight Series. These are technically middle school level books
that know many kids have read already... but due to the mature and
sometimes violent content I have to either an email, a note, or a
message written in their schedule books before I will allow students to
check these books out.
Finally.... I'd like your
opinion on accelerated reader and our current reading program. (Reading
for points) I was pretty heartbroken this year at the number of
students who were pretty blatant at how much they DON'T like to read..
and I'm worried that we're getting a little too obsessed with points and
not enough in teaching children to actually like
what they are reading. Mrs Buell has decided to do something slightly
different this year.... and it sounds awesome. But before considering
it, I would like your opinion on the reading program as it stands now
before I make a decision. These are after all your kids and it doesn't
make any sense to me to make a decision regarding their reading
education without your input!
Let me know what you think! If you love it as it is, let me know. If you think a change is in order, let me know.
That's all for now! More updates to follow.

south haven trip
Reminders for tomorrow!
We should arrive at Wolf Lake about around 9:40. We’ll be there in rotating groups until about 11:30 and then we’ll head to south haven.
Wolf Lake is the Fish Hatchery….The hatchery is six miles west of U.S. 131 on M-43 in Van Buren County, on Fish Hatchery Road just off of M-43 on the south side of M-43. Please park in the visitor center parking lot which is the second parking lot. The first lot is for their trucks and vehicles.
Location: 34270 County Road 652, Mattawan, MI 49071.
From there we’ll go to South Haven’s South Beach with the light house. We usually turn up phoenix street.
PARKING FEES FOR YOUR CAR WILL HAVE TO BE PAID BY YOU! We have had parents ticketed in the past for not paying their fees. The only exception to this rule is if the machine is out of order. (this rarely happens but it did last year for certain spaces!) Even I have to pay for the bus which takes up two spaces. Cost is $5.00 per space. unless the cost has gone up since last year.
Kids can eat lunch… we’ll take them to the bathrooms in groups as it’s a small hike. Then they can play on the beach and just enjoy themselves until about 2:15 . They can bring footballs, frisbees, catchers mitts and balls to throw, buckets and shovels for paying in the sand, just no bats for softball.
Make sure to pack your kiddos extra water bottles. There is a fountain by the bathrooms at the beach but its a hike... and we usually take the kids to the bathroom in groups.
Supposed to be a gorgeous day! But remember with cold water temps the air coming off the lake will be colder. Bring a sweatshirt, just in case!

Sadowski update 5/13/14
Whew!
We're in the home stretch! Only 21 more days of school left until your 5th graders become middle schoolers!
Reminder that the middle school will have an orientation meeting this Thursday evening from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Learn about elective choices, tour the building...this is a great introductory meeting.
This Friday is the Outdoor education center or OEC visit. I have already received Epi pens for those kids in my class who are highly allergic to bees... if your child is also allergic, please make sure that we have those on hand for this trip. I'll have my truck there as backup, so that if any of our sensitive kiddos gets stung we can run them straight to the ER in Vicksburg We will call you when we are in route and meet you there rather than wasting precious time waiting for you to come get them at the OEC and then take them to the ER. Temps are supposed to be cooler however, so hopefully the bees will be slow and sporadic the day we are there.
Weather is supposed to be hit or miss with rain... make sure the kids dress appropriately for the weather with close toed shoes and long pants. I will have them off the deck and doing different activities in the woods.
Then, two weeks from the OEC is our Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery and South Haven trip. Parents are allowed to drive their own child both ways on this trip. Many of you have already let your classroom teachers know that you will be doing this. If you haven't, and you would like to drive your child, or carpool with another adult, please let us know. We'd like to only take one bus so that we don't have to be back early for the high school bus run.
Please check the copy of your permissions slips from the beginning of the year to check to see if you signed up for home lunch or school lunch for the OEC or the Wolf Lake trip. Contact your teacher if you can't remember as we have all that information on file.
On the Wolf Lake trip..... due to liability reasons and spring rip tides around the pier, we typically only allow the kids get their feet wet. The water temps due to the massive freezing of the lakes this winter was only 47 degrees as of yesterday..... so I don't think they're going to be dying to get into the water. But if you are taking your own student and they wish to get wetter than everyone else, please wait until we leave! Otherwise we have to deal with "how come they got to...."
Walks on the pier can only be done if parents are walking their own children. Teachers will not be taking classes out individually.
Students are welcome bring footballs, frisbies and other things to play with on the sand, as well as a towel or blanket to sit on while they eat lunch.
Thanks so much and see you soon!

Classroom update 4/15
Spring pictures are tomorrow. The kids brought home a packet about
the pictures before spring break. If I remember correctly, this is the time that
they take everyone's picture and send them all home. If you dont want them, you
send them back to me and I send them back to the picture company. If you know
already that you don't want these pictures just zip me an email and I'll save us
both some time and just keep them to return immediately.
I let the kids know yesterday during science class that we would be getting four hermit crabs and four frogs in the next week for our Systems and Survival Science unit, and that they would need homes after we finish our study of them within their habitat in June. Notes had to be brought to me asap this morning and animals were claimed in order of the notes I received. I won't list the names here, as they kids all know if they got one or not, so ask them if you want to know if you are to expect a "new arrival" the first week of June.
The following just came to us via the superintendent. As this is an "official" email, I would imagine that you have already or will receive this email.
Governor Snyder recently signed legislation which reduced the minimum number of days of instruction in Michigan schools this year due to the severe winter weather. For Vicksburg it reduces the number of make-up days by two. Consequently, the school year will be extended by two days, not four, as previously announced.
As of this date, therefore, the calendar will be changed as follows:
Friday, June 6, 2014, will be a full day of school for students and staff.
Monday, June 9, 2014, will also be a full day for students and staff.
Tuesday, June 10, 2014, will be a half day for students and a full day for staff.
Should future school cancellations require additional days of school, we will add days as necessary. Any added days will follow the same format, with the last day of school being a half day for students.

Remaining owl boxes have been moved to the science lab for spring break.
Boxes need to be picked up by 4/18. Please pick them up from the science lab... I can lend my rolling chair to anyone who needs to carry out one of the bigger ones.
If you don't WANT your box, let me know... there are a few teachers that are interested in buying some for their own property if any kids are interested in selling them. I was thinking $50 or $60 each for the bigger ones and $30 for the smaller ones. The money would of course go to the kids that made them.
Any boxes left after the pick up date that I have not heard from or that have not been collected or claimed will be sold and the proceeds will go to Sunset Lake.
The boxes and the owl call sheets the kids did were outstanding! Thank you parents for all the time (and money!) that went into some of these fantastic projects! This is the first year I have done this.... and I've had so many lower elementary parents ask me if I'm going to continue this in years to come as they now want to build a box or go owl call hunting with their child!
Science tests.... I had quite a few kids ask me to let them know what they got on their tests as soon as I have them corrected... they don't want to wait until after break! (so funny!) If you would like an email letting you know how your child did, email me and I'll reply back with their score. I should have all of them graded by tomorrow.
Thanks and have a great break!

update 3/18/14
Greetings Parents!
Good News!
With all the collected Coke rewards points I just cashed in 1425 more points to get another Barnes and noble gift card!! Woot Woot!
As the book fair was here today I just wrote down a list of books that the kids want.... so I've got more than enough to go to the store for! If you have any ideas for books for the classroom, please let me know.
I currently have three coke rewards accounts going at one time. I'm allowed to enter 100 points a week (it used to be 120.. but I think they caught on to my updated activity!). The next account that is close to rewards cash in is at 920 points... so another 4 weeks and we'll have a card for that account too. Thank you SO much for all the reward carton codes and caps! Keep them coming! I couldn't be doing this without your codes!
Tonight is Literacy night at Sunset Lake. Lit night runs from 6 - 7:30 and there are a number of reading activities you can participate in while you are here, including reading and taking A.R. tests!
The book fair will also be open at that time.
Reminder that the performance at the PAC for music is coming up quick! The performance is next week March 27th at 7:00. Kids need to be there in the choir room to warmup between 6:30 and 6:45. Parents, please take your kid's coats with you when you drop them off... there isn't any place to pile them in the choir room and they often lock it after we head to the performance.
As with years past, kids will be allowed to go to you after the performance when I see you and can see them going to you. Please wave at me to get my attention when I'm standing by your child and looking for you.
Box Tops! So far this year Sunset has earned $4,000 from box tops! WOW!!!! The last boxtop collection time has started.. keep sending in those boxtops and soup labels!
Wow! I've already seen 5 REALLY nice owl nesting boxes! 5 students have brought their boxes in to show off their hard work. So cool to see these and see how hard the kids worked on them.
Remember that if you are working on an owl box that either I need to see the box, or pictures of the box by this Friday the 21st. if you need until Monday, that's alright too... just email me and let me know that it will be completed by then.
For those students who did the owl calls, if they didn't bring home the owl call sheet with their packet, let me know and i can email one for them to fill out. Even if you went but didn't hear any, they can still write about their experience. If you didn't hear owls I'll give you the directions to my neighborhood... we have a virtual "calling war" going on between the barred owls that live across the street and the great horned owls that live in the swamp out back.
So glad the kids had so much fun with this! Thanks so much for helping them extend and apply their knowledge!

Saturday started March is Reading Month! This year's theme is "Go for the Gold"
Kids should have brought home a packet for reading and tallying reading minutes on Friday. Last year of our class had a combined total of 60,153 minutes!
The two students who read the most minutes for this month will win a free wood burned box from me with whatever they want on it. 3rd and 4th place can pick any item out of the prize box.
AND if our ENTIRE class reads more minutes than any other class, I will be happy to spoil them with either a pizza party or an ice cream sundae party...their choice. (I get just a wee bit competitive during this!)
At home minutes will not count unless they are signed by a parent/guardian.
As of this morning's email we are officially adding on 3 days in June to make up for the days we've had off beyond our state allotted 6. And because of THAT Angie Getsinger (the PE teacher) and Mrs Moreno are already talking about moving track and field day so that track and field day isn't so far from the end of school. I"ll let you know when I know.
A.R. dates for this month are as follows:
75% day is 3/18
100% day is 4/2
Owl Projects? How are they coming? I was outside late last night... (11:00) and heard 2 barred owls calling back and forth. too cool!
I have C.D.'s available for those who haven't borrowed it for the owl calls part of the project.
Social Studies Research Project Due this Friday!
Over the past few weeks students have been working on researching a Native American Tribe that was assigned to them. They've had 3 library flex lessons that started the 2nd week in February in which they researched the clothing, shelters and foods that their tribes ate as well as one other choice of study that they chose. (weapons, tools, rituals, stories, etc.)
Two weeks ago they worked on putting all of their information into informative paragraphs. Last week during their Thursday flex they were supposed to work on opening statement and end summaries... but due to the snow day we'll be working on that in here this week. Regardless... their papers are DUE this Friday! I'll be signing out the chrome books this week so that they an get them typed up here in class.
