Welcome to the Sunset Lake 5th grade information site. A place where parents and student can check homework assignments, upcoming evets and field trips as well as school wide events.
Welcome to 5th grade in Mrs. Sadowski's Class for the 2013-2014 school year!
All parents and students are invited to the Sunset Lake Open House this upcoming Tuesday, August 27th from
5:30 - 7:00. 5th grade parents and students are invited first to stop
in the gym at 5:30 for a discussion with all three fifth grade teachers
regarding the year's expectations. Following our talk, you are all
invited back to our classroom to look around, pick your desk, find your
locker, and allow me the honor of meeting you and your child.
I look forward to meeting you all soon!
Sincerely,
Mrs Tiffany Sadowski
As of 8/22/13 my class list of incoming students is as follows:
5th Grade graduation is this Friday at 9:00 in the Sunset Lake Cafeteria. The program should last about an hour. We'll reserve about 15 minutes for picture taking and then we need to get the kids ready for core class switch as usual.
Track and Field Day
Track and field day is next Tuesday on June 4th. Running events take place in the afternoon as does the annual fire department hose down. Sadowski's color this year to wear is yellow... I'll have strips of cloth with yellow on them in case no one has a yellow shirt to wear (and I know not many do!)
Especially for the girls.. please encourage them not to wear a white shirt on that day if they plan on getting wet.
Reminder that younger siblings will not be allowed to participate in the firetruck hose down due to safety concerns... we had a few get trampled by the bigger kids last year. They'll get their chance when they're in 3rd grade....
Wednesday we plan on cleaning the room and packing our things up... In the afternoon I"ll have some kind of last class party for them....
Thursday, May 16, 2013
Tomorrow is the trip to the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery and to South Haven.
Students
that are not riding with their parents will be leaving Sunset at
9:10... which should get us to the hatchery around 9:45.
Directions to the Hatchery....
US 131 north to West Main/M-43
West on West Main/M-43 - South Haven/ Bangor exit 38B
From there it's just a little over 6 miles to county road 652.
There
are two driveways on the right.... the first is for staff only. The
second with the lined parking lot leading to the visitor center is the
one to park in.
If you get there early feel free to walk
around or check out the pond just past the visitor center filled with
trout, salmon and 2 very large sturgeon.
Students and parents
will need to join their classes and teachers when they arrive as we will
be dividing into three groups and rotating tours of the hatchery.
South Haven
At approx 11:45 ish we'll depart for South Haven South beach.
M-43... through Bangor.... over highway 31 (196).... Through Blue star highway....
M-43 turns into Bailey Avenue....around two curves and turns into Phillips street... and FINALLY turn right onto 196 business loop. Take that to Phoenix street and turn left..... that takes you to south beach.
OR you can just turn left onto blue star... take THAT to phoenix street....and the river front park.
$5.00 to park if the yellow boxes are up. checks are fine if you forget classes.
We plan on eating/playing on the beach until 2:30 and then heading home.
FYI....
due to liability teachers can no longer take students out on the
pier... and kids are only allowed into the water up to their ankles.
After we leave, those staying with their parents can obviously do
whatever they want!
Our field trip to the WolfLake fish hatchery and the South
Haven Lakeshore is coming up on May 17th.Below are the following things that you and
your child need to know for the trip.
Dress
: For the trip, please have your children dress in layers. Our weather has been extremely unpredictable
lately so it could snow or it could be 80 degrees!Temperatures by the lake shore this time of
year are typically 10 – 15 degrees cooler than the Kalamazoo
area. This is due to the cold water temps. Please make sure your child has a sweatshirt or light jacket “just in
case”.
Lunch:
Each student must pack or purchase a sack lunch from the
cafeteria.We prefer a disposable sack
lunch as there are less things to keep track of and bring back.NO glass bottles.NO pop!Pop contains too much sugar and salt and they will dehydrate quickly running
around in the sun.Water, Gatorade and
healthy juices are fine. If you signed up earlier this year for school lunch,
this is already taken care of.
Other
Recommendations:We highly
recommend sunglasses, and sunscreen. With the sun coming off the water in South Haven, the suns rays are very
bright and damaging to early season, untanned skin. Please be sure they leave the house with
sunscreen on their faces, necks, ears, and any other exposed skin or they will
burn.
Cameras:If you want to send a disposable camera with
your child that is a great idea! This is their most memorable trip of the
year.PLEASE don’t send expensive
digital cameras with them as they will be destroyed by the sand at south haven.
Even in a case sand gets into EVERYTHING!
Parent
Volunteers:We would LOVE to
have you attend this last field trip with your child and some of you have
already replied.Individuals driving
WILL have to pay a $5.00 meter fee at the beach or be ticketed.Even the busses have to pay the meter. In the
event we LUCK OUT and the meters aren’t up yet, we don’t have to pay.
Lake Michigan: Weather permitting, the kids will be allowed
to go into the water up to their knees. Due to the great number of drownings in
Lake Michigan last year due to rip tides, any student
who violates this rule will be asked to leave the water permanently for the
rest of the trip. This includes having
to chase after a frisbie or ball that might have “accidentally” been tossed out
too far.We ask that any parents
attending this trip with us, also make sure that their children adhere to this
rule regardless of whether you are present or not. Allowing your child to get wetter when all the
others are not allowed to, just makes our job for the day that much more
difficult as we can’t keep track of who is allowed to over who isn’t.
As this is a school field trip, school dress code must be
adhered to. No bathing suits, bathing suit tops, bare midriff shirts or
spaghetti strap tops that show bra straps allowed.
HOWEVER! After the bus load of students leaves, those
remaining behind with their parents can obviously do whatever they want to.
A Walk on the Pier to the LighthouseTowards the end of the trip, if it isn’t
windy, and there are no high waves, those children that want to, can walk with
their teachers and chaperones out onto the pier to the lighthouse for pictures. We will insist that students not walk
on the outer concrete areas near the edge on the way out or back for their
safety.
ALTERNATIVE PLANS:In the event that severe weather is predicted for the day of the trip,
we will plan an alternate activity. In the past, we have gone to the airzoo, or
a movie at the rave theater ( usually the earth day movie)We will have plans in place in case
thunderstorms or severe weather is imminent.
Middle school orientation is May 7th at the middle school from 6 - 8
p.m. If you're a first time middle school parent this is a great meeting
to go to as it will help you get your bearings and help your child pick
which classes are best for them.
The next month has us busy and going somewhere every Friday!
This Friday, May 3rd - Rock and Mineral show Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds
Parents
welcome to attend but we ask that they meet us at the fairgrounds.
Times have changed..... We will be arriving at approx. 12:00 and leaving
around 1:15.
May 10th - OEC All day, Dress for the weather
and bring a lunch. Those who signed up for a school lunch at the
beginning of the year will get one. Email me if you aren't sure.
May 17 - Wolf Lake South Haven trip - All day. Details go out and home this week.
May
23rd (this is a changed date) Creek lesson. Details to go out next
week. Parent volunteers appreciated. This is a wet but fun lesson! 1:30
p.m. - 3:00 weather permitting. Rain date May 30th.
May 24 - A.m. student council to Aspca P.m. Human growth and development.
May 31st 5th grade graduation 9:00... ceremony starts 9:10.
June
4th Track and field day - all day. Reminder that students under the age
of 3rd grade (even present siblings) are NOT permitted to participate
in the fire engine hosing of the kids. Too many little ones got trampled
last year.
June 7th 1/2 day... last day of school

Holy cow... realized on Saturday that I completely forgot to send
home a weekly update AND the spelling lists last week! Hope that didn't
throw everyone off too much!
First... report cards come home
today. I put them in each kid's mailbox so if they "forget" it, feel
free to come back to school and get it! Ha! There is a note attached to
it for you to sign and return to me so that I know you received and
looked over their report cards. Call me 321-1530 if you have any
questions or concerns.
Next.... the walk a thon has been
postponed until NEXT Thursday the 25th of April. The weather this week
is going to be quite questionable... we never know here in Michigan
whether its going to be 70 degrees or 30 degrees and snowing.... so
rather than have everything and all the volunteers caught off guard by a
cancellation we're just switching it to next week.
If you student has not yet turned in their $$ please have them get it turned in to me asap!
Tomorrow
morning (Tuesday) 5th graders who made their 100% A.R. goal will be
traveling to "The Rink" and skating until 11:30 a.m. We'll then return
to school for a normal day. If you don't receive an email stating that your student DIDN'T make their goal, then assume your student is going.
Track
and Field day - June 4th Due to the fact that small children got
trampled last year by the stampeding 3rd - 5th graders when the fire
trucks came to hose them down, any small children (siblings)
accompanying you to watch track and field day MAY NOT participate in the
fire truck drenching. It has become a serious safety concern. The
little ones will get their chance when they reach 3rd grade.
Paper!
We are seriously low on copy paper! If you could donate a package of
paper to the office or our class we would be MOST appreciative.
I
have down on my Calendar that this Friday's dress up day is "Music
Day". Send your kiddos to school wearing your old concert t-shirts....
or dress them up like rock stars. The possibilities are endless!
Spelling lists for this week are as follows:
Literacy night and the after school book fair is tomorrow night from 6
-7:30. Come join us for a night of reading fun and adventure!
We have a change in our time for the May 3rd field trip to the Kalamazoo Rock in Mineral show.
Due to the fact that the busses have to be back at 2:00.... we're going
to eat lunch at 11:15.... board the busses at 11:20 to arrive at the
rock and mineral show by noon. That will give the kids an hour and a
half like we had previously planned.... just shifted back about an hour.
We'll board the busses to return around 1:20. So if you were planning
on meeting us there, know that we're going a half hour early. This is
truly a GREAT show to go to! Tons of rocks and fossils for very cheap,
and lots of precious and semi precious stones at very reasonable prices.
The South Haven trip is still scheduled for May 17. Please put it on your
calendar. Remember that this IS the trip where you can drive your own
child to and from the locations. Please let us know if you will be doing
this, so that we can get an accurate count of our peeps so we know not
to mark those who are not riding the bus absent.
We have an
entire 5th grade science lesson scheduled tentatively for May 24th
(Friday) to be conducted in Clark Park at the creek. During this lesson
the kids will be in the creek using nets to catch critters to put in
holding tanks. Then based on what they catch we can analyze the health
and water quality of the creek and Sunset Lake that flows into it. This
is a really fun lesson but its always good to have extra eyes and hands
at this event! Last year we walked down after recess and were there
until about 3:00.... you are welcome to join us by either meeting us
over at the park or by walking down with us! More information to come as
the weeks progress.
5th grade graduation has been switched to Friday May 31st rather than Monday June 3rd.
Graduation time will be at 9:10 and will take place in the cafeteria.
Also on this day the 5th graders will enjoy a pizza lunch courtesy of
the Fair Housing Committee as a reward for competing in their poster
contest through art class. So on the 31st, if you normally pack a lunch
for your child, you don't have to do so for that day.
Track and field day is scheduled for Tuesday June 3rd. Rain day Wednesday June 4th.
The end of the year is fast approaching (Yikes!) I'll keep you as updated as I can on changing dates.
Spelling lists for this week cover "plurals" of words and are as follows:
